6 dangerous Beliefs that give you A

False Sense of Security

Don't fall for these dangerous beliefs that will come back to hurt you.

Belief #1: "We have backups, so we're safe"

Many businesses assume that just having backups means they’re protected, but they don’t regularly test them to ensure they actually work when needed. Assuming they are working, are they backing up everything they need to? You should go check.

Belief #2: "Our Backups Run Automatically"

Automated backups can fail due to configuration issues, storage limitations, or software glitches, leaving businesses vulnerable when disaster strikes.

Belief #3: “Cloud Storage (Google Drive, OneDrive, Dropbox) Is the Same as a Backup.”

Syncing files to the cloud is not the same as having a proper backup solution. If files are deleted, overwritten, or encrypted by ransomware, those changes often sync across all devices, making recovery difficult.

Belief #4: “Our Data Is Safe Because We Back It Up to a USB Hard Drive.”

Many people believe that backing up to a local USB hard drive is sufficient protection. However, if their primary system gets infected with ransomware, the malware can also encrypt or delete data on connected drives. Without offline or air-gapped backups, these local copies become just as vulnerable, giving a false sense of security.

Belief #5: “Our Backups Protect Us from Ransomware.”

Not all backups are ransomware-proof. If backups are stored on the same network, they can also be encrypted by ransomware, rendering them useless. Offline and immutable backups are necessary for true protection.

Belief #6: “My Computer Wiz Friend/Family Member Set Up My Backups, So I’m Covered.”

Just because a tech-savvy friend or relative set up a backup system doesn’t mean it’s foolproof. Many DIY backups lack proper monitoring, redundancy, and security measures. Without regular testing, verification, and a clear recovery plan, these backups may fail when they’re needed most—leaving businesses and individuals vulnerable to data loss.
